Medical-surgical nursing is a section of nursing that deals with the care of adults in a variety of situations. The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) is a professional nursing organization dedicated to advancing the careers of medical-surgical nurses. Medical-surgical nursing was once considered an entry-level career, with most nurses viewing it as a stepping stone to other specialties. Medical-surgical nursing is the most various subset of the nursing profession. Medical-surgical nursing has evolved into its own specialty as a result of advances in medicine and nursing.

A majority of hospital nurses worked onwards many years ago, and everyone was a medical-surgical nurse. Inpatient clinics, emergency departments, HMOs, administration, outpatient surgical centers, home health care, humanitarian aid work, ambulatory surgical care, and skilled nursing homes are all places where licensed medical-surgical nurses work today. On the battlefield, several military medical-surgical nurses work.
